The above is a payment from Google Adsense, that I received today. The payment amount is blacked out because of Adsense’s rules that state you aren’t allowed to share the exact amount you make with their program. The other information is blacked out for privacy reasons obviously, since it was an EFT (Direct Deposit) to my bank account.

Does this prove to you that it’s possible to Make Money Blogging With Google Adsense? This is my third payment. If I can do it, so can you.

I’ve been blog-hopping a lot lately, and I’ve seen so many great blogs! The cutest layouts, some have really interesting information. You can tell that the owners of these blogs put a lot of time into making it what it is. Yet on many of these blogs, they are not monetized. It brought up the question in my mind, “Do You Blog For Passion Or For Money?”

I even asked several of them and got some varies opinions. Some said that they simply were very passionate about whatever they were blogging about and their only aim was to provide a blog that people would like reading. Others said that while they did have a passion for their topic, they would like to make some money from it as well but simply didn’t know how to. And off course there were the ones that have monetized their blogs and were struggling to make a few bucks from it.

Which category do you fit in?

Would you like to make some extra bucks from doing something you are passionate about such as blogging? If so, Google Adsense is a great option for you.

But not so fast…

In order to make any kind of decent money from Google Adsense, you need a steady flow of targeted traffic.

Having a blog is easy. Any fool with half a brain can create a free blogger account, get a free “cute” layout, slap up a couple of posts on it.. and voila!

Getting people to then find your “oh so amazing” blog is the hard part.

The best way I always recommend to bringing traffic to your blog is through SEO and SEM optimization. What exactly does that mean? It means getting your blog ranked highly on search engines such as Google and Yahoo, so that when someone does a search for your “keywords” (topic your blog focuses on), your blog comes up in the top search results.

Sounds easy right? Not.

It’s a very long process that probably never ends and it will take a few hundred hours of your time before you see any kind of search engine traffic to your blog. Yes I said a few hundred hours. And that’s if you’re doing it the right way.

It includes but is not limited to:
- Optimizing your page’s HTML so that search engines can crawl your blog/site.
- Keeping your blog/site updated with fresh unique content on a regular basis.
- Getting “anchor text backlinks” from authoritative sites/blogs, preferably within your niche.

That’s basically it… but the third point about backlinks is the hardest part. No one is going to sit down and tell you every single place to post so that you get backlinks. You need to do the research yourself.

I myself am still learning the entire process and in no position to teach, but I’ve learned from Googling my questions and asking those that know more than I do. Reading a ton of information and then applying what I’ve read to my blog. And if I’ve learned this way, so can you.

However, if SEO and SEM doesn’t seem like your kinda “thing”, don’t panic. There are a few other ways you can bring traffic to your blog. They probably aren’t going to be as effective as search engine traffic, but it’s traffic none the less and it’s worth a shot.

Here’s an article I wrote recently with 10 Tips To Bring More Traffic To Your Blog.

So this Google Adsense payment has brought my earnings to $5079.98! Yes I have officially broke the $5000 mark and it took me about 15months to do it. Not bad eh?

I’m pretty proud of myself right now if I do say so myself. ;)

    Well done on breaking the $5k barrier! I reckon it's gonna take you a lot less time to make the next $5k.

    Re: Adsense – I looked on Google regarding mentioning your Adsense earnings and I came across one of Courtney Tuttle's blog posts. As far as I can surmise, it's ok to reveal how much you've earned; however you can't mention stuff like how many clicks you got, the CTR and the CPM.

    Obviously, do your own homework, but I think it's ok to mention your earnings (if you feel comfortable doing so).

    Have a lovely weekend :-)

    How to make money with Google AdSense

    From my experience, the 5 most effective strategies for making some good money with the Google Ad Sense program are as follows;

    1. Ad Block Formatting: Decide what ads suit the content of your website and how you would like them displayed. Make the ads seem like part of the site itself. Choose to use both image ads and text ads

    2. Ad Placement: The chances of your ad getting noticed by the visitors to your site increases greatly if you place ads as close to the top of your webpage as possible. If you choose to place so-called ‘skyscraper’ ads – in magazines these would be called columns – on the sidebars of your webpage, it would be wise to place them on the right side of your principal content areas. The reason for this is the visitor to your page (in most languages) will read from left to right, he or she will chance upon the ad ultimately, if not consciously then at least out of habit. Their eyes will go there. From the left, they can visually “skip” the ad when they start reading next to it.

    3. Researching Keywords: The number one mistake most website publishers make is to constantly choose high-paying keywords assuming that it will yield them more income. The goal here should be clicks, not only the SEO rankings. Relevance is more important than value. Research your keywords for AdSense ads by:-

    (a) Checking out the popularity of various keywords if you already have an account with Google AdWords. Google AdWords also has a tool known as the AdWords Keywords Tool which can sometimes help you search for alternate keywords and variations.
    (b) Keyword Analyzer can generate numerous key phrases that are typed by Internet users in different search engines. Consider getting a WordTracker account. They have an excellent tool that suggests top 1000 most popular keywords. This tool can also help you create a list of relevant keywords for your webpage. Alternatively search for top 100 keywords on 7search which will give you an idea of the high-paying keywords.

    4. Develop Content: Do not stuff your webpage with a million keywords for so-called “search engine optimization.” Do not fall into that trap and clutter your webpage with high-profile buzzwords that do not contribute to the value of your webpage or the experience of your intended audience. Remember, we’re focused here on clicks, which means bringing relevant readers to your site and giving them a good experience that puts them in an inquisitive or buying frame of mind. Use different page titles for different pages. Have unique page titles based on the specific content of each page. Avoid generic or vague page titles such as ‘Untitled Document’ or ‘Page 1’. Be crisp and precise and avoid using long phrases and difficult words in the page titles. If your page has a very long title, it might get banned from some search engines.

    5. Tracking and Reports: Tracking the results of your marketing efforts can help you focus your efforts and make adjustments to win. Google offers a great free tracking feature known as ‘Channels’. You can use these channels to track ads on specific URLs or to categorize ads based on their formats, keywords, location on web page and so on. You can choose from two channel types offered by Google. URL Channels which will help you track the performance of your web pages without altering your ad code and Custom Channels used to track the performance of your webpage based on the criteria that you specify. You can choose what specific factor you would like to track and customize the channel according to your requirements

    @ebele,

    Thanks hun!

    I actually googled around a bit myself about the whole Adsense thing and it seems like most people are saying it's okay to give an average figure for the month..

    Since I'm not seeing any definite rule quoted from Google's policy about it, I think I'm gonna stick with just averaging for now. :)

    Besides, it's really not that hard to figure out since I track my earnings everytime I'm paid ;)

    @Patrick,

    Thanks for that share. You have some great info on how to increase adsense earnings.
